The lighthouse Stevensons : the extraordinary story of the building of the Scottish lighthouses by the ancestors of Robert Louis Stevenson by Bella Bathurst is an account of lighthouse construction, mostly around the coast of Scotland (hence the travel element). It is an account of life threatening adventure as well as skilled engineering, and it is an entertaining and nicely paced read.

The image, below, shows one of the lighthouses built and demonstrates some of the challenges for the construction.
